Earlier this year, the Washington Post leaked transcripts of Donald Trump’s January calls with Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
There were so many punchlines from those transcripts that it was almost impossible to make an exhaustive list of them. Indeed, pretty much everything Trump said to Nieto and Turnbull was a zinger. Here’s a fun graphic that recalls a few of the “better” soundbites:
One thing that America learned from the transcripts was that Trump is even more xenophobic than everyone realized, and that’s saying something because this is a man who, in a speech announcing his candidacy (so, in his very first speech as a candidate) called Mexicans “rapists.”
“I am the world’s greatest person that does not want to let people into the country,” Trump told Turnbull, expressing his dissatisfaction with the Obama administration’s agreement to accept 1,250 asylum seekers. He went on to “explain” his position as follows:
I hate taking these people. I guarantee you they are bad. That is why they are in prison right now. They are not going to be wonderful people who go on to work for the local milk people.
That “local milk people” bit went viral immediately and become a meme overnight.
Well now, WaPo has apparently spoken to two people who were briefed on a meeting Trump had with lawmakers on Thursday in the Oval Office as part of the effort to craft a bi-partisan deal on immigration. Here’s what Trump reportedly said when someone floated restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries:
Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?
As WaPo goes on to write, citing aides,”Trump had seemed amenable to a deal earlier in the day during phone calls, but shifted his position in the meeting and did not seem interested.”
Needless to say, this doesn’t bode well for some kind of amicable resolution to the immigration issue.
Then again, Trump is just quoting the inscription on the Statue of Liberty which reads:
Give me your tired, your poor,

Yeahbut there’s no denying that “Haiti” and “Africa” are shitholes. But so is the United States, albeit less so, and that’s why nobody from half the countries in the world that are better places to be than the US would ever move there – including the folks from “Norway”. And just to be clear, “shithole” status isn’t new to the US; it’s been accumulating since at least two administrations ago. The difference now is that the US is so deep into its shithole, banana-republic status that it’s past the point of possible return.
