The Wound That Never Heals: Lacan Meets Trump

[Read more from NOTES FROM DISGRACELAND and follow on Twitter] 22. XI 2020 There is an essential difference between natural laws and those governing social contexts like history or politics. The former have to be respected while the latter can be temporarily suspended and sometimes completely ignored. Denying gravity cannot be a long-lasting practice and could have dire consequences, but disobeying historical laws can often be done with impunity. During the epochs of paradigmatic social trans

  1. Nice post; We the people cased this. His words unlocked a growing discontent, the feeling of white supremacy being diminished, globalization, xenophobia, anti-politicians ……The horror of the ‘black president’ shook rural America’s collective rocking chairs. Combined with catchy jingoistic phrases, an unbridled ego, he took pages right off Hitler’s playbook, power of repetition (had plenty of media help to bolster the lies) and made lies into truth. He seized the will of 70 million voters, stealing their ability to critically think, heck, even to be so lazy as not taking a few clicks to fact check…..just didn’t care. This has been an education for me, a parallel universe can exist on the bar stool next to you, hidden. Now for a cognac.

  2. Excellent piece which summed up the misery and living nightmare of the last four years under Trump. Healing following deepest division in our country’s long history will have to travel a long road, but I have faith. ( exhale!)

  3. He failed in his Trade War with China, and now he may out-fail that with recognizing Taiwan. That is what I fear from him now. The hints have been there since just after the election.

  4. However he did win in 2016 and only lost by a handful of votes in 2020. What does that say about the US electorate and political system?

    1. Four days ago, you called anyone who doesn’t wear a mask a “yahoo” in a public comment on this very site.

So, I could make the same sarcastic remark to you: No wonder he came close to a second term.

  5. There’s a special gift, few have, to be able to encapsulate into a short and well written piece, a relatively clear explanation of the hell we have all been living through. I would add that while Trump has run over the precipice and knows it’s over I believe he’s trying to work this to his favor by trying to collect enough money from the ‘rubes’ to fund his future efforts to control the ‘rubes’ and that includes the members of the Republican run Senate who have also chosen to fall under his charismatic will… like Charles Manson or Rasputin? This explains the farcical efforts of Rudy Giuliani. All of the money didn’t go into the court antics. A lot went into Trumps pockets.
The other point is that in describing the ‘rubes’ he could have added ‘and unwilling to believe he and his acolytes have consistently lied to them’.

  6. I stand and applaud for the author of this article. Best thing I’ve read all month.

Trump the Zombie Hurricane cannot stop destroying and never creates anything but more destruction. Let him lose again soon, and let the title Loser finally stick.

  7. This article cleared up a lot for me. All this time I’d been mistakenly waiting for Trump to run splat-on into the old paint-a-tunnel-entrance on the face of a rock wall trick. So for four plus years I’ve been waiting for him to smash into the mural of deceit as he chased the Road Runner, a crafty bird whose powers of subatomic cartoon particle manipulation allows him (her?) to pass through the faux tunnel like a muon. What keeps me up at night now is I believe Trump has acquired a pallet of ACME Selective Osmotic Subatomic Particle Paint and will use it to evade capture and imprisonment for his crimes at every turn.

But I’m told I need not worry, for I am a hungry worm, and all men, great and small, wise and foolish, shall be served at my table. Verily, by the Power of the Worm none may pass their particles into the beyond that do not pass through me! One way or another.
