Trump Cancels Meeting With Denmark After Prime Minster Refuses To Sell Greenland

In what very well might be one of the silliest (albeit totally harmless) episodes yet in the reality TV show that is Donald Trump’s presidency, the White House has now officially canceled a planned meeting with the Prime Minister of Denmark because she won’t sell Greenland.

“Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time”, a dejected, and clearly pouting Trump announced on Twitter Tuesday evening.

Late last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that the president has repeatedly expressed interest in buying Greenland, an idea aides and advisers aren’t sure whether to take seriously.

Whether or not Trump was serious initially is now irrelevant, though, because he clearly sees this as a challenge.

“It’s something we talked about”, he told reporters over the weekend, before delivering an ad hoc take on the situation. “Denmark essentially owns it [and] we’re very good allies with Denmark”, the president continued, before calling the prospective purchase “a large real estate deal”.

Frederiksen was incredulous. “Greenland is not for sale”, she told Sermitsiag on Sunday, adding that “Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland. I strongly hope that this is not meant seriously”. She also called the whole idea “absurd”.

That, apparently, was a bridge too far for Trump who, in addition to suffering from delusions of grandeur which are no longer delusions by virtue of his having accidentally become President of the United States, cannot suffer even the most trivial of slights, even when they stem from world leaders simply reacting to something objectively ridiculous he’s either done or said.

On Sunday, Trump confirmed that he’d “be interested” in Greenland and said the administration would “talk to them a little bit”.

Or not, as of Tuesday night.

“The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct”, an indignant Trump sarcastically seethed. “I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!”

On Monday, Trump trolled Denmark and Greenland with a meme showing a tacky, gold Trump tower lording it over a seaside village.

  1. This “meeting” was actually a direct invitation by the Queen of Denmark for a State Visit. I doubt, after this insult in just rejecting the invitation, that he will be allowed by the queen to “reschedule” the trip. In fact, I doubt very much whether he’s even aware of the diplomatic insult he’s just delivered.
