France Blasts Trump For Lack Of ‘Common Decency’ After Tuesday Tweets Mocking Nazi Occupation

Unsurprisingly, France is not amused with Donald Trump’s extraordinarily ill-advised decision to mark the anniversary of the Paris attacks by mocking one of the only historical episodes that can fairly be described as even darker for the country than November 13, 2015.

It wasn’t immediately apparent whether Trump appreciated the extent to which yesterday was not the day to launch yet another Twitter broadside against France, but it really doesn’t matter because clearly, telling the French that if it weren’t for America, they’d all be speaking German right now is something nobody should say, let alone the President of the United States.

Trump, still seething from Emmanuel Macron’s rebuke of nationalism during the Armistice Day ceremonies, lambasted France in a series of Tuesday tweets. “Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia, but it was Germany in World Wars One & Two”, the President said, before literally making fun of the Nazi occupation as follows:

How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!

He went on to suggest (for no discernible reason) that American wines are on par with French wines on the way to accusing France of trying to keep him from selling his “excellent” alcoholic grape juice to French consumers.

Commenting on Trump’s absurd attacks, French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux said the following on Wednesday:

We were commemorating the assassination of 130 of our compatriots three years ago in Paris and Saint-Denis, and so I will reply in English: ‘Common decency’ would have been appropriate.

Agreed.

Meanwhile, Angela Merkel echoed Macron’s call for a European army on Tuesday. “We should also work on the vision of one day creating a genuine European army,” she said, speaking to EU lawmakers in Strasbourg.

“The times in which we could unconditionally rely on others are over”, she continued, reiterating a point she’s made on several occasions since Trump ascended to the White House.

  1. Too many Americans seem to be happy that the Donald insults and alienates all of Americas friends while sucking Putin’s dick at the same time. I don’t want to believe that America is that stupid, but two years on, the evidence is unassailable.

  2. I don’t understand how either house of congress or either political party can sit there on it’s thumbs and not stand up and say something. Surely to God there is some one in Washington who is tired of putting up with this idiot.

  3. If the Russia probe is allowed to do its job, then the Donald will end up making Nixon look like a boy-scout. However, if the republicans (and it is completely in their hands, i.e. the Senate) allow the Donald to shut it down (Nixon failed when he tried), then America is truly fucked. It would mean that all the institutions that took 200-years to build and that protected the American people from demagoguery have been destroyed in 2 short years.
