It took the President a little longer than usual to get started on Twitter this morning (it’s possible he’s got a cheeseburger hangover), but it looks like he’s managed to at least get started on “Executive Time” which, as Axios reminds you, is ostensibly spent in the Oval Office but “in reality” involves Trump sitting around in his residence, “watching TV, making phone calls and tweeting.”
Well on Tuesday, fresh off adding another nickname (“Dicky Durbin”) to the presidential vernacular, the President decided to lash out at his favorite target: Mexicans.
Here’s an all-caps-laden attempt to crank the fear knob up again by helping whatever’s left of his base persist in the fantasy that the solution to America’s drug problem is building the Great Wall of China on the southern border:
As a reminder, he’s looking for $18 billion to build this goddamn monument to xenophobia and in case you missed the Wall Street Journal’s story on it, nearly $6 billion of that is earmarked for “non-wall requests” including literal watchtowers, surveillance equipment, and drones.
If that sounds like what you’d get if you asked a 5-year-old to draw a picture of a prison wall, that’s because Trump has the mentality of a small child and he thinks in terms of things he’s seen in movies.
The reason he’s tweeting about this right now is because he’s apparently prepared to risk a government shutdown over DACA, which he’s using as a bargaining chip to extort funding for the Mexican-be-gone fence. His new “strategy” is to claim that Democrats are effectively robbing the military by holding out for a better deal (and by “better” we mean “sane”) on immigration:
The stupidest thing about these tweets is that he apparently doesn’t understand how laughably transparent they are to anyone who is any semblance of intelligent. He’s trying to rile up his base by tying the military to this issue so he can claim that not only are Democrats in favor of letting drugs and rapists pour into the country, they’re also implicitly in favor of gutting the military. That sets the stage for him to say that Democrats are responsible for terror attacks.
Of course none of that is even remotely true. But that won’t matter to his brainwashed supporters.
Allow us to remind you one more time that this wall is a pipe dream. It is never going to be built and even if Trump does manage to squeeze some funding out of Congress for it, there is exactly zero chance that it is ever going to live up to the campaign trail hype. If you need a refresher course on just how ridiculous and far-fetched this is, see here, here, and here.
Oh, and he’s now contradicting Sarah Huckabee Sanders in real-time (as opposed to with the traditional 12-hour delay from her daily press briefings until the following morning’s “Executive Time”). On Tuesday morning, she told Fox News that the White House wants a “clean” spending bill, without immigration language,” and a second deal related to immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children. I’m not sure that’s consistent with his tweets.
Hilariously, she called the bipartisan meeting at the White House last week “a good starting place.” You’re reminded that one of those meetings found Trump calling the entire continent of Africa a “shithole.” Apparently that’s “a good starting place.”
Meanwhile, he’s still pretending the Russia investigation is over and that “the public” is actually buying into this ridiculous narrative about a conspiracy between Hillary Clinton, Obama’s Justice Department and the Kremlin.
Obviously, no one with any sense believes that.
The real question is whether Trump will ultimately swerve in this game of chicken with Democrats in order to avert a government shutdown which, were it to occur, would invariably be blamed on him despite his best Twitter efforts to change the narrative.

This too shall pass. When I count up the Millennials, people of color, Democrats, women, Independents who thought they’d give him a chance, plus the more moderate Republicans, it’s difficult to see how the current loony-on-duty can last.
Francois Hollande was elected president of France with 56% of the vote, yet still managed a 4% approval when he left…
I agree with Pete however I am seriously pissed at the repubs that are lying and covering for him and the ones that know he is nutzo and have done nothing to remove him right now! They all should remember their duty is to the country and not their party and they are employed by the citizens of this country and work for us not for him.
If the repubs would wake up and unite and do the right thing for this country RIGHT NOW they may have a chance of keeping their jobs — if they continue to sit and do nothing, they have no chance even once he is gone! This country is really angry about this now.
These outrageous tweets underscore what a fool Trump is. The Repubs won’t be able to continue their support with any more goofs like these.
Don’t fool yourselves into complacency. He has to continue to screw up in tangible ways (and close to election) or his base will come rushing back towards him come the next elections. It is extremely easy to whip up fear, and that was and is Trump’s and GOP’s strongest tool.
It may be his strongest tool but I would actually suggest his base has that as their strongest weakness and his strongest tool is to see that and work them accordingly
