Bombshell: Rosenstein Said To Consider Recusing Himself From Trump-Russia Probe

Bombshell: Rosenstein Said To Consider Recusing Himself From Trump-Russia Probe

And it gets better.

Minutes after Donald Trump effectively accused Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein of conspiring against him…

…and hours after that same Rod Rosenstein warned that Americans shouldn’t trust anonymously-sourced media reports…

…ABC News is out with this:

From the story:

The senior Justice Department official with ultimate authority over the special counsel’s probe of Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 election has privately acknowledged to colleagues that he may have to recuse himself from the matter, which he took charge of only after Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ own recusal, sources tell ABC News.

Those private remarks from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein are significant because they reflect the widening nature of the federal probe, which now includes a preliminary inquiry into whether President Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice when he allegedly tried to curtail the probe and then fired James Comey as FBI director.

Rosenstein, who authored an extensive and publicly-released memorandum recommending Comey’s firing, raised the possibility of his recusal during a recent meeting with Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand, the Justice Department’s new third-in-command, according to sources.

Although Rosenstein appointed a special counsel to lead the federal probe, he still makes the final decisions about resources, personnel and — if necessary — any prosecutions.

In the recent meeting with Brand, Rosenstein told her that if he were to recuse himself, she would have to step in and take over those responsibilities. She was sworn-in little more than a month ago.

ABC acknowledges what we said earlier this morning – namely that Trump has made things even more complicated with this Friday tweets:

Potentially complicating matters, Trump posted an exasperated message today on Twitter, dismissing the Russia-related probe as a “witch hunt” and lamenting that he’s “being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!”

Also recall what we said about Rosenstein himself becoming a target. To wit:

That certainly seems to suggest that Rosenstein may ultimately find himself in the line of fire when shit really starts to hit the fan on the obstruction of justice charges. Of course he could point to the appointment of special counsel Mueller as evidence he wasn’t complicit, but that’s kind of like Trump pointing to the 59 tomahawk missiles he launched at Syria as “proof” he’s not colluding with Moscow.

Well, here’s ABC with the same thing:

Rosenstein is keenly aware that he could become a potential witness in the investigation.

So now we know why Rosenstein sent out his cryptic statement about anonymous sources – he was trying to cast doubt on the ABC report that he knew was about to hit the wires.

As a reminder, this is the order of succession:

Not to put too fine a point on it, but this is falling apart.

For now, just recall one last thing we said earlier this week:

If you’re so inclined, do feel free to read whatever you want to read and watch whatever you want to watch from all the media outlets and fringe blogs that are willing to go down with this ship, but just remember that this ship is indeed going down.

  1. Not only am I an independent (Donald Trump would be just as incompetent as Democrat as he is a Republican), but necessarily I’m pretty much a pragmatist and consequently have little patience with our governments ability to process, put together and act on the blatantly obvious in their criminal investigations – most especially of their own. From my point of view – it seems that the media (advertisers), Congress (media time before constituents and voters) and the respective investigating agencies (media time and name recognition for DC ladder climbing) are feeding off of this absurdly pathetic, internationally demeaning, and dangerous to the nation – Trump drama – for all its worth to their respective careers.

    1. “Not only am I an independent ” – Yeah, but for my day job I carry Trumps water.

Makes no sense. Trump is obstructing justice and the people are rising up against it. What is wrong with that?

  2. Trump is already positioning himself to get a pardon from (sign right here ) Pence who may himself need a one. Trump knows as the Prez he has a “cannot prosecute” card while “IN OFFICE” but will need a pardon when he is impeached (not likely with the sleazy republicans covering for this fool) or resigns in shame (ours not his, he has no shame). What part of who’s lying do these republicans not understand. It would be absolutely perfect if when all this comes out (and it will) the whole cover-up was about “hookers and peeing.”
The republicans and their “family values” prez will again look like the hypocrites they are. Oh please, please, please…………..
