China’s February PMIs Are Out. They Are Awful.

The numbers are in, and they are predictably bad. And by "the numbers", I mean China's official February PMIs. And by "bad", I mean the lowest on record. The manufacturing gauge tumbled to 35.7 in February, some 10 handles below consensus, although given the circumstances, it's not clear it even makes sense to refer to economist estimates. Nobody had any real idea how these numbers were going to come in, other than that they would invariably reflect the shut-ins, quarantines, travel restrictio

  1. Friday evening… Another “community spread” case in Northern California (Santa Clara, i.e. Silicon Valley). Also, a community spread case in the Portland Oregon area. Many hospitals out here on West Coast not even testing for COVID-19 due to lack of test kits (or properly functioning test kits). So is our “low” case count in the US a function of not testing? Do we see a big spike once proper test kits are more readily available throughout the country? Tip of the iceberg, man…

  2. I suspect low cases (so far) in US is partly due to failure to test (thus milder cases undetected) but also travel restrictions delaying spread (deaths fitting Covid19 profile would probably not escape attention).

That brief period of apparent isolation is over. Three (four?) detected community acquired cases likely means dozens of undetected cases who are spreading the virus in many communities. If it’s in a quiet suburb of Portland OR, you can bet its in NY, LA, SF, etc.

The next phase may be when new confirmed cases grow but are still limited by testing capacity, especially if limited capacity is used for surveillance testing. Some will take comfort in the apparently restrained rate of new cases, others will see through that. It will be interesting to see if the Federal government tries to suppress or restrict information flow.
