For The Second Sunday In A Row, Jim Jordan Embarrasses Himself, This Time With George Stephanopoulos

Republicans have found themselves back on the defensive following Donald Trump’s overt calls for Chinese president Xi Jinping to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden.

The president’s remarks, delivered Thursday on the White House lawn, were about as unequivocal as it gets.

Asked specifically if he had already raised the issue with Beijing, Trump said, quote, “It’s certainly something we can start thinking about because I’m sure that President Xi does not like being under that kind of scrutiny where billions of dollars is taken out of his country by a guy that just got kicked out of the Navy”.

The president has repeated some version of that on Twitter on several occasions since.

Despite the fact that Trump made the remarks in public and then confirmed, in the very next breath, that he did indeed mean that China should consider investigating the Bidens, and despite the president having said the same thing (or some derivation of it) over and over again on his verified Twitter account, some of his supporters on the Hill are desperately clinging to notion that somehow, reality isn’t reality.

Take Jim Jordan, for example. Having learned exactly nothing from an embarrassing exchange with Jake Tapper last weekend, Jordan decided it would be a good idea to subject himself to questioning by ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

It did not go well.

“I still haven’t gotten an answer to the question. Is it appropriate for the president to ask China to investigate Joe Biden”, Stephanopoulos asked, after a series of attempts to get Jordan to address the issue head on. Here’s what Jim came up with:

“I don’t really think he meant ‘go investigate'”, Jordan said, before attempting to put the question back to Stephanopoulos: “Do you think China is gonna investigate him?”

Clearly, that is absurd. The question isn’t for Stephanopoulos and the question isn’t whether such an investigation is feasible or likely. The question is whether it’s right for Trump to say what he said on Thursday, in front of a dozen cameras on the White House lawn.

“I don’t know whether China is going to investigate him, but we know that the president asked them to investigate him”, Stephanopoulos said.

“We know they’re not. Come on”, Jim tried to joke.

“Why can’t you answer yes or no?”, Stephanopoulos calmly asked, again.

“Because I don’t think that’s what he did!”, a visibly perturbed Jordan shrieked, his voice cracking like a prepubescent.

Stephanopoulos was unrelenting. “You’re still not answering the question”.

There is no defending Trump, and Republicans – even those like Jordan who are more than willing to exhibit unfathomable shamelessness in front of the American people – are running out of excuses.

Again, you’d think Jim would know better than to subject himself to this after last weekend’s botched interview with Tapper that resulted in the congressman becoming a trending topic.

But alas, for the second Sunday in a row, Jordan found himself lampooned on social media. He was, again, at the top of the trending list.

    1. “Stick with us. Don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news. … What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.”
