Necessity Is The Mother Of Legislation: Here Comes The Fiscal Cliff

They say necessity breeds invention, which is understandable because you might not be inclined to invent something you don't need. But on Capitol Hill, necessity breeds legislation, and that's unfortunate because legislating is Congress's job. So, when they're not doing it, they're derelict, pretty much by definition. Of course, if America didn't need any legislation -- colloquially, if there was nothing that needed fixing -- we wouldn't want government passing laws, spending, and tinkering ju

  1. I really really really hope the GOP throws in the towel here, after much posturing the fiscal cliff is looking a lot more like a black hole. When you combine the effects of the $600 unemployment bonus and the eviction prevention along with PPP loans and you get what we have now which is the economy holding on by its teeth with real long term consequences racking up anyway… pulling the rug out would be catastrophic.

  2. The Republicans bet the ranch on a summer lull in Covid. No aid to States because back then it was a mostly Northern Democratic problem. Numbers were low in the South and the heat would keep it at bay.
The hair salon story from Texas,if true, is very telling about masks. We are now almost certain to have 200,000 dead by election. A National Mask policy as late as July 1 could have made a difference.
I am Suffolk County New York. We feel like we are in a sweet spot now but the word on the street is that out of town assholes will bring it back. I drove by the train station this morning. Empty. Normal times it would be abuzz with beach travelers. We are not locked down any longer. Most merchants I talk to here and down to Cape May,N.J. are working to pay the lease and nothing more. Starting to remind me of the Seventies….yuk!
Forget about Florida, driving around there the last several years it was obvious that a recession would kick their ass. Texas is a whole big part of GDP. Georgia has become silly, awful that people die for bad reasoning.
Love is blind Mr. President but good luck trying to make millions love you. Do the hard job trust fund kid.

  3. In the Middle Ages diseases were thought to be caused by miasma, night vapors, etc. As a direct result, modern Western medicine has a very high threshold to conclude that a disease can be airborne. They may have done some harm by deprecating the chance that COVID-19 can be active in the air. We may have their final conclusion In a few years

  4. Appears the EU is trying to scale back the 750B euro recovery plan to 400B euro. This is probably what Republicans are watching and want to do (scale back).
The key difference, however, is that Europe is in control of the virus and they are willing and able to shut down any hotspots.
    USA, however, is chaos.
