In 2018 people stepped up and showed up. Keep it up in 2019. We’ve got a lot of work to do, and I’ll be right there with you. Happy New Year, everybody!
That’s a simple, straightforward, New Year’s day message from the President.
And by “President”, I mean President Obama.
President Trump’s New Year’s message was a bit more, well, a bit more bombastic. To wit (and this is verbatim):
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE HATERS AND THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA! 2019 WILL BE A FANTASTIC YEAR FOR THOSE NOT SUFFERING FROM TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME. JUST CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE RIDE, GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING FOR OUR COUNTRY!
You can’t accuse him of lacking enthusiasm.
As detailed here on Monday evening, Democrats are all set to try and reopen the government with a plan that involves passing two bills, neither of which includes money for any “walls”, “slats” or “wheels” (on New Year’s eve, Trump likened “walls” to “wheels” when it comes to inventions that are impossible to improve upon by virtue of their essential perfection).
Trump confirmed that no wall money is in the cards on Tuesday and, as you might imagine, he isn’t amused.
Hilariously, he’s now effectively contradicting himself by suggesting that in fact, the wall is the innovation, a contention that is starkly at odds with his previous rhetoric which characterizes the wall as a kind of primitive necessity while innovations like drones and surveillance are merely “Tech ‘stuff'” that, “by comparison” to a solid concrete barrier, amount to “meaningless bells and whistles.”
“The Democrats, much as I suspected, have allocated no money for a new Wall. So imaginative!”, Trump chided on Tuesday, before insisting, for the hundred-thousandth time, that “without a Wall there can be no real Border Security.”
After retweeting himself a couple times, he moved on to address retired four-star general Stanley McChrystal, who, in an interview with ABC that aired on Sunday, called Trump an immoral liar.
“‘General’ McChrystal got fired like a dog by Obama”, Trump said, on the way to calling him “a total bust” and contending that ol’ Stanley is “known for [a] big, dumb mouth.” He is, Trump shrieked, a “Hillary lover!”
So, if you were wondering whether the government is likely to be reopened anytime soon or, more broadly, whether 2019 is going to be any different than 2018 in terms of Trump’s descent into dictatorial delirium, the answer is…
