Listen, Jeff Flake is not – and I repeat not – going to back off on Donald Trump.
You’ll recall that back in October, Flake delivered what, in retrospect, may be remembered as a speech that marked a turning point for lawmakers’ collective willingness to put up with the President’s antics.
Later that night, Flake “went there” and invoked Joseph Welch for an Op-Ed in the Washington Post.
Of course calling Flake’s speech a “turning point” would imply that something has actually changed since then and unfortunately, nothing has.
Which I suppose is why Jeff felt like maybe he needed to reiterate his misgivings about President “stable genius” on the Senate floor Wednesday.
In his speech, Flake lashes out at Trump’s assault on the free press, comparing the President to Joseph Stalin:
He also blames Trump for inspiring and emboldening dictators around the world (although we would argue that the causality there actually runs in the other direction).
And here’s Flake explaining that contrary to Trump’s rather explicit desire to brainwash the masses, he does not (and will not) succeed in defining the “truth”:
Ultimately, Flake once again suggests that Congress is complicit and calls for action. To wit:
No longer can we compound attacks on truth with our silent acquiescence. No longer can we turn a blind eye or a deaf ear to these assaults on our institutions. And Mr. President, an American president who cannot take criticism — who must constantly deflect and distort and distract — who must find someone else to blame — is charting a very dangerous path. And a Congress that fails to act as a check on the president adds to the danger.
Will his Republican counterparts finally grow some balls or otherwise find their spines which are apparently now required to be checked at the door?
Probably not. But that’s fine, because Robert Mueller will end this one way or another.
I was spellbound – he did an incredible job! He has all the BEST WORDS!
Heisy. Look man, I know you like to provoke, exaggerate, embellish, etc. And while I would love to believe your words, Mueller is mostly certainly not going to put an end to Trump. And anyone peddling that idea, or any ideas of impeachment/removal, do us all a grave injustice by lulling people into a sense of complacence (since Mueller will “take care of it for us,” why do we need to fight?)
This is going to be a war of words and ideas (if not a literal war) for another three years minimum and we would all do well to buckle up for the long fight. So please stop saying this shit cause it’s irritating me.
Yours truly.
Rudy
tough shit, Rudy. that’s what we do over here: irritate people. that’s kind of the business model.
With such a great speech on the floor, I’m more confident than ever that Trump’s base will diminish.
trump is a complete failure. When I saw the civilized and singing protest by the Jewish group today at Capital Hill, in support of the DACA “children” , I watched in silence. One by one, each person was arrested, handcuffed behind their back (unnecessary!) with zip ties and lead away, calmly and still singing. When the cops arrested the Rabbi and led him away, also handcuffed, I was really angry.
How far is this inept and despicable prick president willing to go so he can sit back and smile and enjoy the cruelty he has the power to bestow on the Dreamers. He only cares to use them as a bargaining chip to get what he wants – that ridiculous wall that Mexico refuses to pay for – so assface will use his power to force the Americans to pay for it, with no consideration of the thousands of families he is harming and the abuse of the children of so many of these people.
Watching the family torn apart when the father was deported to Mexico and left his American wife and 2 American children crying at the airport the other day was horrible and just plain mean. A 39 year old man who came here with his parents when he was only 10 yr old. Twenty years later he was forced to return to Mexico by trump.
trump has no empathy and is a disgusting human being – and the really sad sick part of all this, he is loving every minute of it.
