Donald Trump was up before dawn on Wednesday and he was playing the hits loud and proud.
Just 12 hours (give or take) after saying that “newspapers and magazines” (all of them) are almost as fake as CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS, Trump took aim at Comey and Hillary again. Apparently, he finally got around to reading two-day-old news about how then-Director Comey drafted his 2016 Hillary Clinton statement months ahead of time. That story was based on a heavily-redacted document posted by the FBI called “Drafts of Director Comey’s July 5, 2016 Statement Regarding Email Server Investigation Part 01 of 01.” Basically, critics say it proves Comey might have goal seeked his decision not to “lock her up.”
And that’s fine – the criticism I mean. Two things worth noting. First, of course there were political motivations there, that’s kinda how it works – it’s Washington. It’s not good, but it just is the case, so you know, by all means decry it, but Jesus Christ, do us all a favor and don’t act surprised, ok? Second – and more importantly – who cares at this point? Hillary Clinton is a private citizen peddling a book that might as well be called “Excuses”, James Comey was fired, and Donald Trump is President.
Furthermore, say what you will about Comey being biased, but there is no question that on net, he was a negative to Hillary Clinton’s campaign and do you know who understands that? Donald Trump, that’s who. You’re reminded that the decision to fire Comey came down just hours after the FBI admitted that Comey had in fact grossly exaggerated the extent to which Clinton mishandled classified information. Trump was essentially telling you that because Comey might have mishandled the Clinton probe, he needed to be fired. That’s how stupid this administration thinks you are. They thought you were going to believe that. And they thought you’d see no connection whatsoever to the fact that Comey was investigating Russian meddling in America’s democracy. In short, you were supposed to believe that Donald Trump became a Hillary Clinton sympathizer earlier this year. It was just a happy coincidence that sympathizing with Hillary Clinton gave the President an excuse to fire the man who was investigating his administration. Recall this from a New Yorker piece that ran after the firing:
Are we seriously being asked to countenance the idea that Trump fired Comey because he didn’t treat Hillary Clinton fairly? The same Trump who seized upon Comey’s press conference last July and used it to buttress his claims that Clinton should be jailed. The same Trump who, on October 31st, said, “It took guts for Director Comey to make the move that he made in light of the kind of opposition he had.”
Until the White House comes up with a less ludicrous rationalization for its actions, we can only assume that Trump fired Comey because the Russia investigation is closing in on him and his associates, and he knew that he didn’t have much sway over the F.B.I. director. That is the simplest theory that fits the facts. And it is a cause for great alarm.
So given all of that, you’ll love these, tweeted just a few minutes ago:
Note that Trump seems to be throwing Jeff Sessions right back into the fire. Get ready Jeff. You’ve gotten too damn comfortable lately. If you thought issuing a cruel decree about deporting Dreamers was enough to keep you safe from the moron for the rest of the year, you were wrong.
Next up were Democrats:
The part about the tax cut is a lie. His tax cuts are not the “largest in history.” Literally dozens of people have told him that, but as usual, he doesn’t care.
And of course the NFL:
He’s still going, too. Currently – as in, right this second as we write this – he’s tweeting about how he didn’t actually tell a dead soldier’s wife that the guy “knew what he signed up for.” Don’t let it be lost on you that this is yet another conversation no one would be having had he not falsely claimed that Obama never called dead soldiers.
Just another day in America.
