Welcome to Turkey America.
This weekend, we documented the latest push by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to crack down on things he doesn’t like. Those things include, but are certainly not limited to:
- free press
- free speech
- information in general
- anyone who might have ever said the name “Fethullah Gulen”
- anyone who is a Kurd
We’ve variously asked how Erdogan’s critics – many of whom belong to the increasingly cartoonish and thoroughly discredited alt-Right blogosphere – would go about reconciling their disdain for Erdogan’s autocratic behavior and similar behavior from the Trump administration.
Behavior like “absolutely considering” breaking up the 9th circuit.
Well, on Sunday, we get a chance to ask that same question only this time, in relation to freedom of the press, because as White House Chief of Staff and rat dressed in people clothes Reince Priebus told ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl, the Trump administration has “looked at” changing America’s libel laws in order to punish – and this is an actual quote – media outlets who aren’t “responsible with how they report the news.”

That’s right. “Newspapers and news agencies need to be more responsible in how they report the news.”
Here’s an idea Reince: maybe start with Fox.
Again: welcome to Turkey America.

The failing @nytimes has disgraced the media world. Gotten me wrong for two solid years. Change libel laws? https://t.co/QIqLgvYLLi

Call pest control; there is an insane, mean-spirited, orange monkey running around in the White House. How much global humiliation can America take?
This is perfect. These idiots would effect the mechanism that would punish their own propaganda outlets.
