Strait Talk

The Strait of Hormuz is closed. Again.

A month on from Donald Trump’s declaration that the waterway was fully open to commercial vessels (“Let the oil flow!“), traffic was all but halted.

Although some tankers continued to brave transit over the weekend along a route hugging the Omani coast, they did so at their own risk.

The Guards consider that route — which doesn’t require vessels to check with, or pay tolls to, the IRGC’s nascent maritime authority — a violation of the ceasefire.

On Sunday, New Delhi condemned an attack that marooned nearly a dozen Indian nationals off the coast of Oman. Although India didn’t name the perpetrator, the Pentagon immediately blamed the Guards who fired on, hit and disabled a Cyprus-flagged ship.

Hours later, US forces conducted another round of airstrikes against Iran, hitting 140 targets “includ[ing] missile and drone sites, ammunition storage facilities, communication networks and coastal surveillance locations,” Centcom said. It was the third round of strikes in six days. According to local reports, the US also hit energy and petrochemical facilities.

The Guards retaliated, and the scope of their targets appeared to widen. In a statement, the IRGC said it disabled logistics facilities in Jordan, where a “drone hangar” was allegedly destroyed. Iran also targeted US radar sites in Kuwait, support systems for American aircraft carriers in Oman and a maintenance facility for US warplanes in Qatar.

Most of the Guards’ specific claims weren’t verifiable, but Qatar reported injuries from falling debris, Jordan confirmed the presence of Iranian missiles in its airspace and Kuwait’s air defense systems were heavily engaged.

Tehran also refused a US demand to declare the Strait open and said it won’t actively participate in nuclear talks until the Pentagon recognizes Iran’s role as maritime traffic cop.

Indeed, Iranian state media on Sunday said the waterway’s closed “until further notice,” or anyway until America stops “interfering in this region.”

Meanwhile, Trump said he’ll destroy the country posthumously if Iran were to assassinate him.

“[S]hould the Iranian Government act on its threat to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting President of the United States, in this case, ME, orders have already been given,” he said. “The US Military is ready, willing and able to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran – PRAISE BE TO ALLAH!”

  1. The childish endings of his messages still make me chuckle after all this time. They sound like a teenager unsuccessfully trying to impress someone on social media – very cringeworthy.

  2. We have previously seen the US try to eliminate Iran’s ability to close the SoH through airstrikes. The US couldn’t do it before; it won’t be able to do it now.
