Donald Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to defend himself, presumably after coming to the begrudging conclusion that his latest effort to slander Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib amounted to a gaffe, and a pretty egregious one at that.
On Tuesday, during remarks to reporters at the White House, a disgusted Trump said that if you ask him, “Jewish people that vote for a Democrat—I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty”.
That didn’t play particularly well with some folks, for obvious reasons (he was unwittingly trafficking in anti-Semitic tropes).
And so, Trump decided it would be a good idea to quote conspiracy theorist Wayne Allyn Root in defense of his bungled effort to ingratiate himself with Israel and Jewish voters.
“Thank you Wayne Allyn Root for the very nice words”, Trump began, before quoting Root as follows:
President Trump is the greatest President for Jews and for Israel in the history of the world, not just America, he is the best President for Israel in the history of the world…and the Jewish people in Israel love him like he’s the King of Israel. They love him like he is the second coming of God. But American Jews don’t know him or like him. They don’t even know what they’re doing or saying anymore. It makes no sense! But that’s OK, if he keeps doing what he’s doing, he’s good for all Jews, Blacks, Gays, everyone. And importantly, he’s good for everyone in America who wants a job.
“Wow!”, Trump exclaimed.
Yes, “wow!”, Trump, King of Israel, just quoted a man who once suggested that Heather Heyer, the young woman who was killed by a neo-Nazi at the infamous white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, was paid by George Soros. The layers of tragic irony are too many to count.
As the Washington Post reminds you, “Root has promoted numerous conspiracy theories, including that Barack Obama was not born in the US, that Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich was killed by any one of a number of prominent Democrats and that the Las Vegas mass shooting was coordinated by Muslims”.
