Trump Says US Won’t Invade Greenland

Donald Trump’s speech in Davos on Wednesday was very difficult to entertain and I wouldn’t have — entertained it — if I weren’t obliged to editorialize around it.

Part sleepy meander, part grievance-filled remonstrance, Trump’s address touched on everything from credit card debt to drug costs to housing shortages to Fed policy to the stock market to Ukraine to Greenland.

The speech was originally billed as an address focused on housing policy, which did ultimately come up. But overall, there was no common thread, no readily-discernible theme and, frankly, no overarching point to Trump’s ramblings.

In no particular order, he,

  • Criticized Denmark for not meeting its defense-spending commitments related to Greenland;
  • Called Switzerland “an incredible, brilliant place” that’s “only good because of us”;
  • Made fun of Emmanuel Macron’s sunglasses (Macron has a subconjunctival hemorrhage);
  • Said he’ll announce the new Fed chair at some point “in the not-too-distant future;”
  • Embarrassed Mark Rutte with a painfully awkward reference to an exchange the two men had last June. (“[Europe] called me daddy. A very smart man said he’s our daddy”);
  • Said both Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin want to make a deal to stop the “bloodbath” in Eastern Europe and said he’d meet Zelensky later Wednesday in Davos. (Zelensky was in Ukraine);
  • Expressed doubt about whether NATO would defend America if the US were attacked;
  • Praised America’s “very special culture,” which he likened to an “inheritance” from Europe. “We share it, but we have to keep it strong,” he said.

Of course, all anyone really cared about was Trump’s plan for Greenland, which he’s made clear America intends to acquire “the easy way or the hard way,” as he put it earlier this month.

Some worried, not irrationally in light of his remarks and social media posts in recent days, that Trump might use his Davos address to make some manner of formal announcement on annexation. Thankfully, he didn’t.

“We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable, but I won’t do that,” Trump said, appearing to rule out an invasion. “People thought I would use force. I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force.”

What can you say? What can anyone say? “Thanks,” maybe? “Thank you, Mr. President, for not invading a NATO ally?”

Trump went on to deride Greenland as “cold and poorly-located.” It is cold, that’s for sure. But describing it as “poorly-located” seems to undermine the rationale for annexing it. The whole national security pitch turns on the island’s strategic location.

Anyway, Trump said he’s not asking for much. “We want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won’t give it,” he complained. “We’ve never asked for anything else. You can say ‘yes’ and we will be very appreciative, or you can say ‘no’ and we will remember.”

    1. He’s going to be more shameless soon (he is demented, after all). My wife’s journey with Alzheimer’s lasted 18 years. Reagan’s lasted less. Results do vary but my guess is Trump has been afflicted for at least ten years.

  1. I think Agent Orange is confusing “piece of ice” with what he’s grabbed for with impunity at beauty pageants, department stores and Epstein parties.

  2. Sadly I watched as well, even by Trump’s own (very low) standards this speech was beyond embarrassing. I can’t phantom anyone in that room can take Trump, the US or this administration seriously about anything anymore. They can, and should, be afraid of the senile and stupid man in control of a nuclear arsenal, but any remaining hopes that the rest of the “civilized” western world can continue to rely on the US were erased today. It is not possible to come back from this level of stupidity and infantilism.
