Zelensky Gets Thoughts And Prayers In Davos

“I’m Jamie Dimon from JPMorgan Chase,” said Jamie Dimon, from JPMorgan Chase. “God bless you.”

Dimon was introducing himself to comedian-turned front line embodiment Volodymyr Zelensky. The two men were in Davos for this year’s edition of elites on parade.

I don’t know why they still hold the World Economic Forum. At this point, it’s just an excuse for disaffected voters around the world to trade churlish jokes about the rich, who don’t do themselves any favors by volunteering for a gathering so vulgarly ostentatious.

Historically, the aristocracy didn’t get the message until the commoners were in the streets waving pitchforks and torches, but you’d think, by now, that round after round of unfavorable election results for the status quo (“the establishment,” broadly construed) would’ve been a wake-up call.

It was fitting that Davos kicked off just as Donald Trump steamrolled the Iowa caucuses as if no one else was running for the Republican ticket. Because, in effect, no one else is.

Anyway, Zelensky wants — needs! — money. Another tranche of US funding is frozen in the ninth circle of hell: The US House of Representatives. In Europe, Viktor Orban has positioned himself as a perpetual obstacle to Ukraine aid, surely at the behest of the Kremlin. The American right has developed a fawning affinity for Hungary’s strongman. Some worry the Trump faction of the GOP intends to implement Orban’s blueprint for “illiberal democracy” in the US.

In addition to Dimon, Zelensky met with (or at least chatted with) Ray Dalio, Brian Moynihan and Steve Schwarzman, as well as Ursula von der Leyen, Chris Coons and, ultimately, Antony Blinken, who’s spent the better part of the last two years flying around the world with a malfunctioning fire extinguisher.

In the battle for Ukraine, Zelensky’s holding the line, but that isn’t good enough anymore, apparently. The West wants results, where that’s supposed to mean recaptured territory. In the battle for headlines (space above the fold), Zelensky’s losing to Gaza, an awkward situation that effectively requires him to emphasize that Ukraine matters more without coming across as crass or insensitive.

Trump’s romp to the GOP nomination and the prospect of a second Trump presidency casts a pall over the war. He was, after all, impeached for trying to extort Zelensky, and “collusion” or not, Trump makes no secret of his admiration for Vladimir Putin. And, like Putin, Trump isn’t shy about his disdain for NATO.

The deck of a piece published in The New York Times late last week summed up the situation on the front lines in eastern Europe. “Ukrainians are weary, short of ammunition and outnumbered, and their prospects look bleak,” Thomas Gibbons-Neff wrote.

The linked article, which is well worth a read, quoted a Ukrainian soldier who said, “If our international partners moved faster, we would have kicked their ass in the first three or four months so hard that we would have gotten over it already.”

“Thoughts and prayers,” as the GOP likes to say. Or, to quote Dimon, “God bless you.”

  1. “emphasize that Ukraine matters more without coming across as crass”

Well said. It’s exactly that. Palestinians don’t matter in the grand scheme of things (apart from the fact that every life is supposed to be precious but hey that’s a thought for poets and philosophers). Stopping Russia and nipping Great Game bullshit in the bud matters to the whole world…

… especially Europe. I cannot believe we’re letting Orban delay anything by a single day. At some point, if the rules get in the way of your prosperity/survival, rules should be ditched.

  2. “Historically, the aristocracy didn’t get the message until the commoners were in the streets waving pitchforks and torches, “
Isn’t that what the WEF is about? Convincing the pitchfork people that the torch people want to take away their pitchforks,

  3. Undeniably, the last war before now was the idiotic invasion of Iraq in 2003. Then we had the predictable end of a 20 year run in Afghanistan… Now we have IMO a different situation. First Crimea, now Ukraine. In Trump, we have a man who has shame based secrets from a reckless past. People will go to their death under torture to keep shame based secrets. Thus, the visible fear on his face at Helsinki with Putin. He is compromised. Hungary is clearly a major security risk, as may be Serbia…Dictators who are economically incompetent frequently start wars…This is a set of circumstances we have seen before…By the way, unlike Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, the Ukranians really want to fight, and they also show us the folly of having given up their nukes-America is under stress from within and too preoccupied to wake up. If you don’t like the Ugly American, look at Russia and China.
