Rudy Giuliani Tells NYT Mueller Obstruction Case Should End By September So The GOP Doesn’t Get Screwed Like Hillary Did

Presidential attorney, former New York mayor, and man who inexplicably snitches on his client every time he goes on television, Rudy Giuliani, has a lot in common with every other lawyer Trump has ever had. For instance, he’s incompetent and he likes to imagine the Mueller probe will be wrapping up aaaany day now.

Since joining Trump’s legal team (and thereby condemning himself to the wrong side of history) last month, Giuliani has at various times suggested that the special counsel  investigation is winding down and much like Ty Cobb and John Dowd before him, he’s doomed to see that prediction proven demonstrably wrong.

Giuliani’s ongoing press junket has of course been a goddamn train wreck, full of bizarre rants and characterized by an unnerving (if you’re Trump and Michael Cohen) penchant for accidentally pseudo-confessing to actual crimes. Even Trump realizes it, going so far as to suggest that Rudy “get his facts straight” just two weeks after Giuliani took the job.

For reasons that remain a mystery (apparently job performance isn’t something Trump takes into account when evaluating his attorneys) Giuliani continues to give interviews and in his latest attempt to pretend like he has the power to slap a sell-by date on the Mueller probe, he told The New York Times on Sunday that the obstruction part of the investigation should be over by September 1. To wit, from the Times:

The special counsel plans to finish by Sept. 1 its investigation into whether President Trump obstructed the Russia inquiry, according to the president’s lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani, who said on Sunday that waiting any longer would risk improperly influencing voters in the midterm elections in November.

The office of the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, shared its timeline about two weeks ago amid negotiations over whether Mr. Trump will be questioned by investigators, Mr. Giuliani said in an interview.

Mr. Giuliani’s comments were an apparent attempt to publicly pressure Mr. Mueller amid their interview negotiations. He urged that the investigation be wrapped up as soon as possible, pointing as a cautionary tale to the revelation by the former F.B.I. director James B. Comey in the last days of the 2016 presidential race that he was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. Mr. Comey’s announcement is widely blamed by Democrats for costing her the election. The F.B.I. found no wrongdoing.

Ok, so a couple of things there. First of all, Giuliani doesn’t get to tell Robert Mueller when the investigation will be over, because that’s now how lawyer-ing works.

Additionally, it’s absurd on its face to suggest the special counsel should give a shit one way or another whether his investigation is still going on during the midterms. That’s like saying if an NBA player is under investigation for murder, that investigation should be forcibly closed prior to the MVP voting because you know, you wouldn’t want people to get the “wrong” idea.

But beyond that, this seems to be a continuation of Giuliani’s strange attempts to draw a parallel with James Comey and I guess what one wonders given the comments cited there by the Times is whether Giuliani is basically admitting that Hillary Clinton should have won the election. Here’s what he said, verbatim:

You don’t want another repeat of the 2016 election where you get contrary reports at the end and you don’t know how it affected the election.

So in other words, “you don’t want a situation where the GOP gets fucked out of the midterms like Hillary Clinton got fucked out of the presidency.”

I’m sorry, but Donald Trump needs to fire this old bastard immediately, because it is abundantly clear that he has no idea what he’s doing.

Or actually scratch that. Let him keep giving interviews. It’s going “tremendously”.

ughh
