Flynn: I’m Not A Traitor, I Swear

Needless to say, the Mike Flynn situation is fluid.

After the initial news hit that Trump’s disgraced national security adviser was set to plead guilty to lying to FBI agents about his contacts with a Russian envoy, speculation immediately turned to what it would mean for Donald Trump.

It is highly likely that Mueller had enough evidence to charge Flynn with far more than what he did, which suggested that Flynn had cut a deal (more here).

Just hours later, we learned that in fact Flynn has pledged his cooperation with the Mueller probe and according to ABC, that would include testifying against Donald Trump.

This is of course in exchange for leniency from Mueller and could include a deal to save his son who many have speculated could have been indicted by the special counsel as well.

The White House is clearly on the back foot here, but did say this:

  • GUILTY PLEA DOESN’T IMPLICATE ANYONE BUT FLYNN: WHITE HOUSE

Here’s Ty Cobb trying to deflect:

Today, Michael Flynn, a former National Security Advisor at the White House for 25 days during the Trump Administration, and a former Obama administration official, entered a guilty plea to a single count of making a false statement to the FBI.

The false statements involved mirror the false statements to White House officials which resulted in his resignation in February of this year. Nothing about the guilty plea or the charge implicates anyone other than Mr. Flynn. The conclusion of this phase of the Special Counsel’s work demonstrates again that the Special Counsel is moving with all deliberate speed and clears the way for a prompt and reasonable conclusion.

Obviously, that’s an absurd way to spin this. Here’s what Flynn said:

  • Flynn Called Trump Transition Official to Discuss Russian Sanctions
  • Flynn Talked With Trump Official to Discuss What to Tell Russian Ambassador
  • Trump Transition Team Didn’t Want Russia to ’Escalate’
  • ’Senior’ Transition Member ’Directed’ Flynn to Contact Russia on Sanctions

Flynn’s statement reads as follows (apparently, he isn’t enamored with the whole “treason” label):

Treason

Folks, let’s not sugarcoat it: this is bad news for the administration, and that’s being reflected in the stock market where things have deteriorated meaningfully over the last hour.

It’s all downhill from here and one certainly wonders what happens next with Jared Kushner and Donald Trump Jr.

From Russia with love…

  1. ”Admit Nothing -Deny Everything – Make Counter-Accusations.” It’s the operating strategy of both first and the second oldest professions.

Richard Nixon: I’m not a crook.” and now Michael Flynn: “I’m Not A Traitor, I Swear”

There is a certain Republican (admittedly – politicians in general) familiarity and higher frequency with these types of attempted denials.

Ronald Reagan nominated politician as the second-oldest profession with the alleged quip, “Someone once said that politics is the second-oldest profession. I’m beginning to think it bears resemblance to the first.”

It’s gotten to the point that the most probable certainties – are the opposite of what a politician claims when accused. Or, is it that US politics is now completely owned and operated by the CIA, other alphabet intelligence agencies, or even a nameless black agency.
