As Peso Slides, Mexico Reminds Trump: ‘We’re Not Paying For That Wall Under Any Circumstances’

Just in case you were wondering, Mexico saw Trump’s tweet this morning.

You know, this one:

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/901802524981817344

And here is Mexico’s response:

Our country will not pay, under any circumstances [for] a wall or physical barrier built on US territory along the Mexican border.

Pretty unequivocal I’d say, but you know, maybe Trump has a different interpretation.

Amusingly, Mexico also wants you to know that it’s not lost on their government how absurd it is that Donald Trump is polling Twitter on the future of NAFTA:

Mexico will not negotiate NAFTA, nor any other aspect of the bilateral relationship, through social networks.

And as far as the whole “Mexicans are all criminals and drug dealers” thing, Mexico has the following message for America:

With regard to the violence generated in Mexico by the illicit traffic in drugs, arms and money between our countries, we reiterate that it is a shared problem that will only end if its root causes are addressed: the high demand for drugs in the United States and the Offer from Mexico (and other countries).

In other words: maybe if you people stopped buying drugs, the cartels would stop selling them.

That’s another one of those common sense assessments that’s pretty hard to argue with – unless of course you’re Rick Perry:

Anyway, as we noted earlier, Trump’s tweet was likely to be met with some fireworks in early FX trading and sure enough, the peso took a hit:

On the bright side, Mexico says it’s happy to assist with the hurricane cleanup effort, although I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if Trump told them to fuck off:

The government of Mexico takes this opportunity to express its full solidarity with the people and government of the United States for the damages caused by Hurricane Harvey in Texas and reports that we have offered the US government all the help and cooperation that can be provided by the different Mexican governmental agencies to deal with the impacts of this natural disaster, as good neighbors should always do in times of difficulty.

Full statement in Spanish or, as Trump would say, “in Mexican”…
